Online Franchise and MLB The Show 18

For the online areas of the game, we spent this year focusing on our technology. We knew we had to prioritize the stability and speed of our online infrastructure for MLB The Show 18.

As such, Online Franchise mode didn’t make the cut this year.  This was not an easy decision to make and we understand some of you will be disappointed with this change, but we believe focusing on continuing to improve our online performance was the right priority for The Show 18.  With the major technology change this year it wasn’t possible to just leave in the previous mode without alteration.

Please know that Online Franchise fans are not forgotten and every new year offers an opportunity to evaluate our plans.

Thank you for understanding.

Okay, here's two things. First off, there's no excuse for dropping this at 9:30 on a Friday night March 2nd, after the DD stream and when many people have already pre-ordered. If they ordered from the PS store, they're completely out of luck. You could have and should have told us sooner. But you prioritized sales over your customers and that can never be undone.

Second, I do want to understand because your predicament is quite understandable. You've overhauled online gameplay, so online franchise would need a total rewrite. But since online franchise is less played than other modes, the dev team felt that they couldn't spare the resources for that rewrite this year. And I would have been disappointed but accepted that...IF you had given us something as a placeholder for 18. A simple "league mode", where you could set up a basic league and compete with people online without all of the franchise mode features. Just let us set number of teams, divisions, playoff structure, and an option for fantasy draft. And that could be all. But this announcement shows no indication that even something this simple will be in 18. As it stands, there is literally no way to compete with online opponents in a league. That is insane for a sports video game in 2018. I can't imagine that something as simple as what I described above would take very long to program into the game. I'm writing this hoping you've thought of this, or this inspires you. I know it's late for any major changes now, but I feel this is a pretty reasonable request and it can't hurt to try for a miracle.

    Thanks,

    A Frustated Fan

I knew this was going to happen, I see u guys on the couches during these streams and noone looks happy. i noticed this censored a couple  years back when you started this live stream censored

You all look worn out and unenthusiastic about this game.....its like there is an elephant in the room forcing you to make this game......It absolutely is ridiculous you guys are destroying the Pinnacle of competitive sports games because you are too cheap to upgrade to servers that work. Honestly, your servers dont even matter once the game has been out a while. The die harders still play online franchises through all the censored....You care more about taking our money than presenting us with a product that is fully loaded with game modes for every type of person.....You should atleast refund peoples money and offer us a roster patch for 2017!! #BOYCOTTSDS

I'm pretty upset with the decision. Really what this boils down to is money. They're making more room for DD, the cash cow of the franchise and other sports franchises as well.

Do not be fooled by there attempts to "apologize" or "empathize" with us. They're going to make their money, that's all they care about.

Sad, you were my favorite studios too. I had been singing your praises over these last few weeks. Not anymore, and good luck earning back my trust, loyalty, and ultimately my dollar.

This defies logic.  Short of revamping the entire engine, you cannot sit here and tell me that carrying online franchise forward is impossible because of a "major technology change."  Its censored seriously laughable.  Online Franchise is the main reason I play this game.  Beyond that, this game gets 85% of my total gaming attention, and has for the last 3 or 4 years.  I have an xbox one x, several other games for both systems, a pc...but it all just sits while Im playing The Show.  No more.  A studio as large as SDS obviously has metrics, and their metrics said the money wasn't in online franchise.  So be it.  For my part, I will put my money where my mouth is. Or in this case, where its NOT.  censored SDS.  censored The Show.  They are excluding the mode I love and spend much of my free time playing.  So Im on to the next game experience....oh wait....this brings me to the real travesty of this situation.  SDS has become so beholden their bottom line that they have crossed the line.  I have already digitally pre ordered the game so there will be no refund for me.  SDS WILLFULLY and PURPOSEFULLY withheld this info until now so as not to discourage pre orders, as it surely would have.  A decision of this magnitude (their words..."major technological change") would have been made long ago.  So take the mode I love out, but dont trick me into buying the game first.  censored SDS.  Not sure how complicit Sony is, so Ill leave it at that.  Caveat Emptor.

I've been playing your game for online franchise only for years with a group of people who all are now refusing to be disregarded anymore you give thanks for crushing half of your games community? Diamond dynasty is for cheeseballers who.can only play with stacked teams little kids who can't take losses and you reward those guys rather than actual baseball purists and fans  you have no clue what love for the game means this is a disgrace 2k or Ea sports needs to step up and end this stranglehold you have on baseball games because your game is a piece of trash now clueless morons

Ya idk this seems like game suicide to me i know tons of people who play franchise.I been playing with some fore over 5 years.Shame to see u guys stooping so low as to make it all about money. We already pay 60 bucks for the damn game isn't that enough to keep franchise on?? I mean come on in,immediately canceling my pre-order and staying on 17

It's ever apparent that SDS is focused on Diamond Dynasty over all else. I'm bothered by the news that online franchise has been removed from The Show 18 even though I have no interest in playing the mode. So many other areas of the game have needed attention over the last few years and they've been put off time and time again so that SDS can try and perfect the monetization of DD, or the way players work in DD, or the mechanics of DD, or the servers of DD. I hope the whales in DD can keep your studio afloat because if you continue to make it clear to the rest of your fans that you don't care or won't invest in the parts of the game they love most - you're going to lose out on sales to a ton of people. Just because you're the only AAA baseball game on the market doesn't mean that people will continue to blindly support your work. Step outside DD and really challenge yourselves to satisfy and surprise the rest of your community.

Also, if I had preordered this game to find out my favorite mode had been removed I'd order a chargeback on my credit card. The fact that you've essentially hidden this news on your blog and won't deign to talk about it in a livestream is unethical. In fact, it should have at least been mentioned in the "Little Things," livestream you did a couple of weeks ago where there were lengthy breaks in the discussion filled with absolutely nothing.

You didn’t make this decision tonight. You made this decision months ago and defrauded your consumers by withholding information .... holding off and expecting to keep PSN preorders is insane and I hope someone sues you and takes you out of business forever. And if you did make this decision today than fix it.... How difficult is it to keep the same schedules and do nothing and not bother us...

You either care and knew months ago it was a problem and should have told us what could happen. Or you don’t care and you just thought you’d  be able to add it no problem. It cannot be both. They are mutually exclusive they can’t coexist

So glad retro mode, and batting stance creator was added so that you can end online franchise.

This was a Christmas present from a friend that is no longer with us. At least I’ll have the receipt for memories

Your only "priority" in this decision was for your own pockets. Thank God for retro mode tho right. Pfft absolutely pathetic. I'll be joining all these other upset customers out the door from you SDS. ✌️

Ok here are my comments. I've been playing MLB The Show since 2010 and Online Franchise is the only mode that kept my interest to keep buying the game. We the fans of the game don't have as much information as you do but my opinion is removing online franchise is a Major..... Major ........Mistake.

I'm confused on the direction that the game is going, DD and other game modes are not a true comparable of real baseball and I think the more you step away from what's real the faster this game franchise will fail. These casual fans that look forward to playing the ALL STAR TEAM Diamond Dynasty mode of play will fade. It's just a complimentary mode to real nuts and bolts of a good ole 9 inning, no. 1 thru 5 pitchers, 40, 82 game long grind that makes baseball fun, you should just change the name of the game with these changes. Maybe you're riding your last few years with the most profits possible and figure your profits are more than the losses of Online Franchise players not buying the game...

I believe there is a solution to gain additional profits with the Online Franchise Mode. like another player (WEASEL) mentioned. SDS can offer a more stable online mode (servers) separate from where the casual fan plays to run their online franchise leagues at some cost, and support these customers with more flexible controls and configurations of their franchise. It can also be supported with live streaming of playoffs/world series games, even season games, this could possibly build upon the current fan base of the game platform. The wave of online games and in-game purchases is based on how people/players can come together and form groups/communities and a following in playing together and sharing the fun. DD and RTTS and other modes don't assist in the formation of group play and community building, it's more self gratification, I don't see these modes lasting as the substance of your game...

If SDS is looking to be innovative rather than follow the other gaming platforms they would set a new trend by looking at what makes baseball great and build off that. I think that's in building the Online Franchise mode, getting a true following from the dedicated fans of the game and baseball, not chasing a buck from the casual Complaining gamer who will soon drop this game for the next Madden, Call of Duty or Tom Clancy shooter crave.

You fail 7 out of 10 times in baseball and are still considered successful, it's a grind that kicks your butt every day, don't let the pressure send you down to the minors and quitting SDS, let's play ball the way the game was meant to be!!!!

P.S. there is no honest good competition in DD and other modes, this game has so many exploits from persons playing on monitors to deliberate connection latencies that destroys the credibility of anyone claiming to titles in any other mode than a truly organized Online Franchise League. SDS cannot keep up with these exploits, there will always be skewed stats that they will bang their heads trying to patch....anything else than a well run franchise league is truly a joke///

    Just one man's opinion.
